I cannot pretend that I regard this with favor, but the purpose of life is not to do what we want but what needs to be done. This is what fate demands of us. - Oromis

Christopher Paolini
About This Quote

Oromis is the elf king of the elves of the Dusklands. Oromis is also one of the main characters in The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. Oromis was born with a special gift, he could see into the future - which didn't always go as he desired.

He first sees great suffering ahead for his people, but still he tries to avert it. He then sees that nothing can prevent their downfall and that all his efforts have failed. He concludes that there is no choice but to take up arms against them and he makes a pact with Morgoth in return for power over the other elves in Middle-earth.

The Silmarillion tells the story of how Oromis and his followers fought against Morgoth in a losing battle in Beleriand in order to save the elves from destruction.
